certain events that happened this week led me to start reflecting on some of the thoughts and practices that i have.
incident 1:
very long time ago, i heard a story about how a teacher had inappropriately made judgements towards a quarrel between her students and gave punishments. at that point of time, i had only heard one side of the story, but had made a servere judgement about this teacher and deemed her as lack of principles, not practising what she preached. because of this, i had purposefully selected my lessons to boycott that particular teacher's lesson. until few weeks back, i heard the other side of the story, and realised that i have had sided the wrong party, and have had accused the teacher wrongly.
reflection 1:
felt really bad about it, because it really came down to the point that i was actually doing the very thing that i had accused the teacher for. felt really guilty, and wanted to apologised to the teacher for that. but the thing is, she will not have know this, so is there a need to really go up to her? i'll see about that.
incident 2:
was playing this ice-breaker game during the hons party on tuesday night. here's how the game goes:
1. everybody was supposed to think of a unique trait about themselves and submit their traits to the class rep.
2. class rep numbers off all the traits of everybody and write them all up on a majong paper and paste it up on the wall.
3. everybody is supposed to identify and remember the number that corresponds to their trait.
4. each given a bingo card, one is supposed to go up to somebody and ask him/her any 3 traits that was listed.
if any one of the mentioned 3 belongs to the person, he/she will sign on the bingo card.
if none of the 3 belongs to the person, you are supposed to approach another person and repeat the cycle yet not allowed to go back to the same person that you have asked.
5. whoever is successful in joining up a single line wins the game.
reflection 2:
the lesson that i have learnt from this game is that... we really do practice stereotyping and discrimination, in some way or other. we assume, that fit looking guys like/take part in sports.we assume, that obese people are gluttons.we assume, that girls like shopping, matchmaking, gentle, weak, vain.we assume, that people will smaller eyes as compared to others will have their eyes disappearing into a fine line when they smile. we assume, that gothic lover must be a female.
im guilty.
these stereotypes may or may not be true, but they definitely are most of the time only stereotypes.
