SIA retrenchment

SIA cuts another 130 jobs
SINGAPORE - Singapore Airlines will slash another 130 jobs, the carrier said on Friday, days after already trimming nearly 180 jobs to cope with increasing competition from a slew of budget carriers in Asia.

The 130 information technology employees at the airline would be offered jobs with a company which Singapore Airlines contracts work to, the carrier said in a statement.

The carrier had announced on Wednesday that 70 jobs in its finance division and 108 positions at its ground-handling unit would be cut.

The airline has nearly 15,000 staff and spends over S$1 billion (US$590 million) annually on wages, its second highest cost after fuel.

SIA expects to save S$15 million per year with the job cuts, Friday's statement said.

Like other regional carriers, it is facing rising competition from budget airlines like Malaysia's AirAsia, Singapore's Valuair and Tiger Airways and Nok Air from Thailand.

Another yet-to-be-named Qantas-backed airline is likely to begin operations soon out of the city-state. -- AP
